FO Friday

You may or may not remember last week that I said I had been working on a gift that I didn’t want to show you until it had been given?  Well, I mailed it off and it was received, so now I can show it to you!

It’s a baby gift for my cousin and her husband, who are expecting their first child – a baby boy.

(Sorry, the lighting is crappy in this photo!)

I was looking for a pattern for baby booties to knit, and when I found this pattern I just HAD to knit them!!  Baby Chuck Taylors?  Hell yes!!  (I’m a sucker for the baby Chucks in the shoe stores, too!)

PatternBaby Chucks by Laura Helton
Yarn: Knit Picks Swish Worsted in colors White and Dark Navy
Needles: US 2
Modifications:  several. See below.

I knitted the pattern as-is for one bootie, and was unhappy with how it turned out, so I made several modifications for the final pair. First, I picked up more stitches than called for from the bottom. (I think I ended up with 64 sts.) For the toe I then did a few extra short rows in the blue section before starting the tongue. I added an eyelet row on the 5th row of the tongue (a set of two eyelets in the center of the tongue) to help with threading the laces through. I knitted the tongue a few rows longer, and ended with 2 garter stitch rows before binding off to help eliminate curl. For the top section I worked decreases on each side to taper away from the toe – I think it ended up being three decreases on each side, every other row. I also worked a couple of decrease rows on the back heel – on either side of the center 4 stitches – to draw the back heel in a bit. The rest of the top was worked as per the pattern. I ended up with 28 stitches on the top section after all the decreases.

I think the decreases helped to make the booties look more like tennis shoes.

Overall, they were a very fun knit, and I will definitely be knitting these again!

The hat was an improvised design:

Pattern: mine
Yarn: same as booties
Needles: US 5

I simply casted on 64 stitches and worked 1.5 inches in 2×2 ribbing. I then started the stripes, and worked gradually increasing stripes until the hat was about 5 inches from the cast on edge. I then did an 8 point decrease every other round until I had 8 sts left. Add a pom-pom and you’re done!

I really need to knit more baby things – they’re fast and easy and super-cute!!

Happy Knitting!  And I hope all of you here in the US have a great Memorial Day weekend!

  1. OMGoodness … those chucks are too adorable. I’ll definitely be adding this to my “to do” list … I could so see my god-son in these. Your gift is lovely!!!!

  2. Wow, those Chucks are adorable! Almost every pair of shoes I own are Converse, so you can just imagine how much I love these. Too bad I don’t know anyone who’s having a baby! The hat matches awesome. That baby is going to be stylin’!

  3. What fantastic gifts! The baby chucks are lethal levels of cute, and I really adore the hat, those bold stripes are great.

  4. Considering doing these booties for my cousin’s new baby boy. They look amazing!
