Knitted Buds

“Buds” are similar to bobbles, in that they make three-dimensional bobbles on the surface of the knitting. Bobbles are completed right after they are formed, before the rest of the knitting is worked on again. Buds, by contrast, are not finished right away, but the rest of the knitting is worked on and the bud is worked alongside until it is finished– a number of rows later.

These work in stockinette, but look best against reverse stockinette fabric.

Here is a video on these:

A Rosebud is a smaller bud, but taller (the one on the right in the photo above):

Row 2 (WS): Purl the 5 sts, making each purl st a double wrap as you form it. (10 loops) Resume row.
Row 3: Slip the 5 sts with yarn at back, and dropping the extra wraps (to form 5 elongated sts.) Pull yarn tight. (5 sts) Resume row.
Row 4: Slip 5 sts with yarn in front. Resume row.
Row 5: Slip 3 sts, p2tog, pass slipped sts over. (1 st) Resume row.

A Peony is a larger bud, but shorter (the one on the left in the photo above):

Row 1 (RS): In bud stitch, work a (k1, yo, k1, yo, k1, yo, k1) into a single stitch, then finish the rest of the row. (7 sts)
